Day 3 - Transporter Bridge & Tumbles

Day 3 began with a fried breakfast and some welcome sunshine as we pedalled out of Middlesbrough. We saw a house covered in beer cans that I'm now sad I didn't stop to photograph.

I had been looking forward to the Transporter Bridge since it had been suggested and in the sunshine it totally lived up to expectations. It was on telly last night and I was chuffed to be able to say 'I've been on that!'

We pedalled onto Hartlepool with a quick stop to photograph Seal Sands which truly lived up to their name. Our plan had been to lunch in the Marina but we were too early so pushed on along the disused railway route to Castle Eden.

When I was a kid the Castle Eden Inn was a family favourite as it did a roast dinner on a platter. Perfect for families as it's kind of a personal carvery and you just help yourself. They even did a platter of banana split! I've never seen them anywhere else but I wouldn't want too now as in my child size memory they were massive, don't think they would live up the expectations now!

Anyway, back to the story, we arrived at the Castle Eden Inn and I was amazed by how much it has changed. We settled on comfy sofas next to the piano and enjoyed a lunch that everyone agreed was fantastic.

After lunch we headed out for the final leg. Joining route 1 toward Sunderland. It's probably weird that I have a favourite bit of route but I always enjoy going over the water on the slats.

Slowly everyone peeled off to head home and we said our goodbyes. Making promises to head out again early next year.

The final joy of Sunderlands city centre cycle routes was one for me to enjoy alone. And it was while I was pelting along these, weaving between the chavs and broken glass, that I performed the best 'off' I've ever managed.

One second I'm riding, the next I'm on the floor nursing a broken hand while some kids offer a round of applause.

Not realising how badly injured I was, I picked myself up and pedalled home. Happy it hadn't happened earlier, especially not in Scotland!

Another brilliant day of riding and only one tiny blip that is all part of the calculated risk.

56km in total finished the weekend off nicely
